Statement from The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P.

OTTAWA - The Honourable Rob Nicholson, Member of Parliament for Niagara Falls announced today that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming federal election. 

“After much consideration, I have decided that I will not seek re-election this fall.  It has been an honour to represent the riding of Niagara Falls in the House of Commons and I am incredibly grateful to the people of Niagara Falls, Fort Erie and Niagara-on-the-Lake who put their trust in me to serve as their Member of Parliament,” stated Mr. Nicholson.

“I am confident that under the leadership of Andrew Scheer, a Conservative Government will be elected this October and I look forward to lending my support to the campaign,” added Mr. Nicholson.  Rob Nicholson is currently the longest serving Member of the Conservative Party, having first been elected to Parliament in 1984 and re-elected in 1988, 2004, 2008, 2011 and 2015.   

During his 24-year career in the House of Commons, Rob Nicholson served under three Conservative Prime Ministers, beginning in 1984 in the Government of the Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney, where he held the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Government and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.  Former Prime Minister Kim Campbell appointed him Minister for Science and Minister responsible for Small Business.

Rob Nicholson served in the Government of the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper from 2006-2015 as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Minister of National Defence and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister for Democratic Reform and prior to that, he held the position of Chief Opposition Whip. 

Mr. Nicholson was also active in municipal politics and was elected to the Niagara Regional Council in 1997, 2000 and 2003. 

“I have been truly blessed to have fulfilled my dream job of serving as a Member of Parliament.  I am looking forward to spending time with my wife Arlene and our family, who have been so supportive throughout my political career,” stated Mr. Nicholson.
