Introduction

Mayor Salci, honored guests, ladies and gentlemen. Bonjour à tous.

We all know that modern infrastructure is key to successful economic development.

Canada’s New Government recognizes that for communities like Niagara Falls, this means infrastructure to help support its economic growth and prosperity.

Canada’s New Government commits up to $35 million toward Convention Centre Project

That’s why I am very pleased to announce that Canada’s New Government will provide up to $35 million toward the construction of the Niagara Convention and Civic Centre.

This new facility will help strengthen the economy.

It will help make a positive contribution to the Niagara Region.

I am particularly pleased that, once completed, the Convention and Civic Centre is expected to be a model for environmental sustainability.

It will seek to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (also known as LEED) certification.

Canada’s New Government – Delivering Results

With this funding, Canada’s New Government is delivering on its commitment to support infrastructure investments that contribute to the development of sustainable communities and to the growth of the economy and jobs for Canadians.

We are taking action to ensure the health and prosperity of our communities, and to help build a better Canada for future generations.

I would also like to talk to you about the historic commitment this Government made to infrastructure in Budget 2007, committing some $33 billion over seven years.

This is the largest commitment to infrastructure made by a federal government in over 50 years.

Building Canada

Our “Building Canada” infrastructure plan will focus on things that matter to Canadians, such as improved water and wastewater systems, safer roads and highways, public transit and green energy.

“Building Canada” will make an important contribution towards the economy, the environment and safer more prosperous communities.

This Government is taking action to restore the country’s infrastructure – to build a modern Canada.

The Building Canada infrastructure plan will include targeted support for communities, such as ours.

It will help support smaller-scale municipal projects, as well as large strategic projects.

It also includes the extension of the Gas Tax Fund, which will contribute $8 billion in new funding for municipalities, providing long term predictable support they can plan on.

Conclusion

In all, we’re investing heavily in the well-being of our country and our communities.

No other government has ever done as much to support infrastructure in Canada’s cities and communities and encourage improved environmental stewardship.

I’m proud to be part of bringing these real advantages to Niagara Falls.

Thank you. Merci.
